Name
St. San Pasqual
Description
Saint San Pasqual is the patron saint of cooks, cooking and food.
Feast day: May 17
San Pasqual was a simple Franciscan monk. He was very devoted to the Holy Eucharist. It is said that as a cook in the monastery his kitchen duties were miraculously taken care of because his devotion was so great. It is also said that as he fed the poor, his baskets were miraculously refilled.
San Pasqual is best known for two things: the Battle of San Pasqual during the Mexican-American War, and San Pasqual, the patron saint of cooks, kitchens, and shepherds. The battle, fought in 1846, was the bloodiest in California during the war and is commemorated at the San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park. San Pasqual is also the name of an American Viticultural Area (AVA) known for its wineries.
Battle of San Pasqual:
This battle took place in the San Pasqual Valley and involved American forces under General Stephen Kearny and Mexican forces under General Andrés Pico. The battle is known for its high casualty rate, with the Americans suffering significant losses.
San Pasqual (Patron Saint):
Saint Paschal Baylon, known as San Pasqual in Spanish, was a 16th-century Spanish Franciscan lay brother. He was known for his humility, devotion to prayer, and service in the kitchen, which led to him becoming the patron saint of cooks, kitchens, and shepherds.
San Pasqual Valley AVA:
The San Pasqual Valley is also an AVA, or American Viticultural Area, in San Diego County, California. It is known for its wineries, particularly those producing Rhône varietals like Syrah and Mourvèdre, according to Wikipedia.

"Praying as I cook"
Joseph Lozano
I don’t exactly remember when I began praying as I cooked. I was told I’m ridiculous but I continued. Its been a good 30 years. Now, cooking in a hospital, I teach others that food has to be respected as we approach it and prepare it. When consumed, it commences healing and maintains health. Jesus did the same…prayed over fish and bread and later over bread and wine.
