Our Lady of Mount Carmel is primarily known as the patroness of the Carmelite Order and for her association with the brown scapular. The Carmelites, a religious order, developed a special devotion to her, seeing her as their spiritual mother and patroness. The Carmelite Order was founded on Mount Carmel in Israel and developed a strong devotion to the Virgin Mary, eventually calling her "Our Lady of Mount Carmel".
