St. John of Capistrano

🕯 Feast Day: October 23
St. John of Capistrano is a powerful intercessor for jurists, military chaplains, magistrates, lawyers, and all who stand against invasion or injustice. A Retablo of St. John of Capistrano would be a meaningful gift for someone in these roles, offering comfort and strength in their challenging work. It serves as a reminder of divine courage and the power of faith to overcome adversity, encouraging them to uphold justice and protect the innocent. This sacred image can provide solace and inspiration, affirming their purpose and dedication.

Early Life & Calling: Born in Capestrano, Italy, in 1386, John was a brilliant scholar who became a successful lawyer and governor of Perugia. After a period of imprisonment and a profound spiritual crisis, he discerned a call to religious life, annulled his unconsummated marriage, and entered the Franciscan Order, becoming a disciple of St. Bernardino of Siena.

Acts of Devotion: He became a renowned preacher, traveling extensively throughout Europe, drawing massive crowds with his fiery sermons and inspiring widespread spiritual renewal. As a Papal Inquisitor, he actively combated heresies, and most famously, he preached and led a crucial crusade against the Ottoman Turks, playing a pivotal role in the Christian victory at the Battle of Belgrade in 1456.

Historical Impact: St. John of Capistrano's unwavering faith and strategic leadership were instrumental in halting the Ottoman Empire's advance into Central Europe, earning him the title "Soldier Saint." He remains a powerful symbol of courage, evangelism, and dedication to defending Christian faith and civilization against existential threats, inspiring perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds.

A House of Saints Prayer: Oh, blessed Saint John of Capistrano, who gathered the faithful like a good shepherd gathers his flock in the high desert, and stood strong against the storms. Inspire us, your humble servants, to carry the light of truth into every darkness, to defend what is right, and to protect our families and our lands with a spirit as brave as the old mountains. Amen.
