St. Blaise

🕯 Feast Day: February 3
St. Blaise supports those suffering from throat illnesses, veterinarians, wool combers, and anyone who cares deeply for animals. A Retablo of St. Blaise would be a truly meaningful gift for a loved one facing a health challenge, especially one affecting the throat, offering a tangible symbol of hope and solace. It also serves as a beautiful reminder for those dedicated to animal care or working with natural fibers, invoking his compassionate spirit and protection in their daily lives. Giving this Retablo shows deep care and a heartfelt wish for divine comfort and healing.

Early Life & Calling: St. Blaise was a revered physician who later became the Bishop of Sebastea in Armenia during the 4th century. He was known for his profound compassion and healing abilities, attending to both human and animal ailments with equal devotion. His calling to the priesthood stemmed from a deep spiritual commitment to serve God and His creation, eventually leading him to withdraw to a cave for prayer and solitude.

Acts of Devotion: Blaise is most famously remembered for miraculously saving a child from choking on a fishbone, an act that led to his patronage against throat diseases and the Blessing of the Throats. While imprisoned during the persecution of Christians, he continued his healing work, mending sick and injured animals that sought refuge with him. He endured severe torture, including being scraped with an iron comb, before being beheaded for his unwavering Christian faith.

Historical Impact: St. Blaise remains a highly venerated saint, particularly for his intercession against throat ailments, a tradition celebrated annually with the blessing of the throats using crossed candles. His life exemplifies courage in the face of persecution, profound empathy for all living beings, and the enduring power of faith-inspired healing. His story continues to offer comfort and hope to the sick and vulnerable across the global faith community.

A House of Saints Prayer: Blessed St. Blaise, good shepherd of the suffering, we ask your kindness, like the warmth of a desert sun. Protect these throats, strong as ancient adobe walls, from all harm and trouble, just as you healed that little one. Guide our hands to gentle care, our hearts to true faith, amen.
