St. Leonard of Port Maurice

🕯 Feast Day: November 26
A retablo of St. Leonard would be a meaningful gift for missionaries, preachers, or spiritual directors, offering inspiration for their work in spreading faith and guiding others. It would also comfort anyone undertaking a significant spiritual journey or dedicated to the Way of the Cross, reminding them of steadfast devotion and powerful intercession. This image serves as a constant encouragement to persevere in sharing the light of faith and walking the path of spiritual growth with courage and grace.

Early Life & Calling: Born Paolo Girolamo Casanova in Port Maurice, Genoa in 1676, he pursued classical studies and was destined for a career in medicine. A profound spiritual experience at a young age led him to abandon his secular path and join the Friars Minor of the Strict Observance (Alcantarines) at 21, taking the name Leonard.

Acts of Devotion: St. Leonard was renowned as an extraordinary missionary, traveling throughout Italy for over 40 years and preaching thousands of powerful Lenten and Advent missions that often lasted for weeks. He is especially credited with popularizing and systematizing the devotion of the Stations of the Cross, establishing over 572 *Via Crucis* across Italy, including the Colosseum in Rome.

Historical Impact: His fervent preaching and dedication to spiritual renewal ignited widespread religious revival across Italy, drawing immense crowds and leading countless souls to conversion and deeper faith. St. Leonard's enduring legacy is his instrumental role in solidifying the Way of the Cross as a central Catholic devotion, a practice cherished globally by the faithful to this day. His methods of evangelization continue to inspire missionaries and spiritual leaders.

A House of Saints Prayer: Oh, San Leonardo, guiding light on our dusty paths, you walked with the Sacred Heart in your own. For those who seek to share the good news, or to walk the Way with open heart, be our steady star. May your wisdom shine, like the sun on sandstone, leading us closer to the Holy One. Amen.
