St. Clare

🕯 Feast Day: August 11
St. Clare is a powerful intercessor for those in media, especially television, and for anyone struggling with eye conditions or seeking clarity of vision. She also watches over goldsmiths, embroiderers, and needleworkers. A Retablo of St. Clare would be a heartfelt gift for a journalist or filmmaker, reminding them to seek truth and light in their work, or for someone facing a challenging diagnosis, offering comfort and hope for healing and clear insight. It also makes a beautiful blessing for an artisan, encouraging dedication and spiritual focus in their craft.

Early Life & Calling: Born Chiara Offreduccio in 1194 to a wealthy noble family in Assisi. Deeply moved by St. Francis's preaching, she secretly left her home on Palm Sunday night in 1212 to dedicate her life to God, receiving her habit from St. Francis himself. She embraced a radical life of poverty and prayer, inspiring other women to join her.

Acts of Devotion: St. Clare famously founded the Order of Poor Ladies (Poor Clares) at San Damiano, living a life of strict cloistered poverty and devotion to the Eucharist. During an invasion of Assisi by Saracen mercenaries, she reportedly repelled the attackers by presenting the Blessed Sacrament at the monastery gate. Her body, found incorrupt centuries after her death, is venerated in Assisi.

Historical Impact: St. Clare's profound commitment to poverty and contemplative life provided a vital female counterpart to St. Francis's male order, establishing a distinct and enduring Franciscan spirituality for women. Her order, the Poor Clares, continues her legacy of prayer and radical simplicity globally, serving as a powerful example of faith and trust in divine providence. She also championed the "Privilege of Poverty," ensuring her order could own no property.

A House of Saints Prayer: Oh, Santa Clara, shining light from Assisi, we ask for your clear sight and steady hand. Help us to see the Lord's presence in our everyday, like you saw Him in the Blessed Sacrament. May our work be honest, our hearts be open, and our faith be as strong and true as the mountain rock, through sun and through storm. Amen.
